Well pressure fading in a dry spell: pump problem or aquifer drawdown?.
A drop in well pressure sends people straight to replacing the pump, which is sometimes exactly wrong. Around Plant City, the water level itself can be the culprit.
The three things that cause low well pressure.
Low or fading pressure on a well comes from one of three places: the pressure tank, the pump and its controls, or the well and aquifer supplying it. They look similar at the tap but need completely different fixes, so the goal is to tell them apart before spending money.
A quick read of the symptom narrows it fast. Rapid on-off cycling points at the tank. No water at all points at the pump, switch or power. Pressure that fades over days of dry weather points at the water level itself. Each deserves its own check.
When it is the pressure tank.
The pressure tank stores water under a cushion of air so the pump does not run every time you open a tap. When the tank loses its air charge, or its internal bladder fails, the pump kicks on and off rapidly, a pattern called short cycling.
